Painting with Purpose: How Pappas Painting & Repair Built a Reputation for Excellence

In an industry where reliability and customer service are often hard to find, Pappas Painting & Repair Inc. has built its reputation by doing the simple things exceptionally well - showing up on time, communicating clearly, and delivering high-quality work every time.

Founded in 2002 by Frank Pappas, the Lakewood-based company has grown into one of the Denver area’s most trusted painting businesses. The company’s foundation, however, was shaped long before its first paintbrush touched a wall.

Frank spent 37 years working for United Airlines, where he learned the importance of punctuality, professionalism, and exceptional customer service - lessons that later became the backbone of his painting company.

In the early 2000s, the airline industry faced major challenges following the events of 9/11. Like many employees, Frank experienced significant salary cuts and uncertainty. While still working for United, he began painting on the side - a skill he had developed years earlier in college. What started as a small side business quickly gained momentum.

Frank recognized that customer service and quality in the trades were often inconsistent. Drawing from his airline experience, he made professionalism, punctuality, and communication non-negotiable. Based on these core values, Pappas Painting stands behind its work by offering a FREE 10-YEAR WARRANTY on most exterior projects and a 5-YEAR WARRANTY on cabinet refinishing.

Homeowners quickly noticed the difference, and word-of-mouth referrals fueled the company’s early growth. Demand increased so fast that Frank’s sister began helping run the business from her basement in Lakewood. At one point, the company had more work than it could handle, and Frank jokes that he was “paying my sister to turn down jobs!”

Today, Pappas Painting & Repair operates five crews year-round, expanding during the busy summer months. Many team members have been with the company for 5–15 years, creating an experienced team that takes pride in their work.

One element that sets Pappas Painting apart is its structured approach to every project. Inspired by systems Frank utilized during his airline career, the company uses detailed procedures and checklists to guide each job.

Exterior projects begin with pressure washing, scraping, sanding, caulking, and priming before two coats of paint are applied. Interior projects receive the same attention to detail, including carefully taped and caulked transition lines for crisp, professional results.

Before any paint is applied, the team conducts a post-preparation walkthrough to confirm all prep work has been completed correctly - an extra step that helps ensure the finished product meets the company’s high standards.

Clear communication is another hallmark of the Pappas approach. Projects are managed with detailed work orders, color-matching documentation, and clearly approved change orders. For larger projects, the company also offers professional color consultations to help homeowners confidently choose the right palette.

Approximately three-quarters of the company’s work is residential painting, split evenly between interior and exterior projects. In communities like Solterra, the team frequently works with stucco homes and uses specialized products such as Sherwin Williams LOXON and stucco-specific caulk designed to bridge cracks and protect surfaces over time.

Beyond painting homes, Pappas Painting is deeply committed to the community, faith, and helping those in need. Through its Pappas Gives Back Program, the company donates free or reduced-cost painting services to nonprofits across the Denver metro area. The team has supported organizations such as Ronald McDonald House, Girls Inc. of Metro Denver, The Conflict Center, SAME Café, and several local churches.

Frank was also heavily involved in developing (in 2015) and volunteering for Fathers in the Field (now the Forge Program), which mentors boys without fathers through three-year commitments. He still keeps in touch with past mentees, some who are now in their 20s and 30s.

When he isn’t running his company, Frank enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife Jane, who still works for United. They love hiking, fishing, boating, and spending time with their children and two grandchildren, Liliana (Lily – 5) and Archer (Baby Bobo – 2 months). Frank also enjoys bird hunting with his German short-haired pointer, Sydney.

Whether working on a home, mentoring his team, or supporting nonprofits, Frank Pappas leads with the same philosophy that guided his airline career - show up on time, do the job right, and treat people well!
